The people’s catchment: community-based flood warning systems

Join us to learn more about the Terrania-Keerrong Flood Safety Project, established by Annie Kia and Greg Hall.

Together with residents in the sub-catchment, Annie and Greg have developed this project so that residents ‘upstream’ can provide valuable information to those ‘downstream’ during extreme weather and flood risk.

After observing the deficiencies and failures of the official system of rain and creek gauges, they started developing a system for citizen flood intelligence to deliver quality data to support the decision making of their neighbours further down the catchment. The Terrania-Keerrong Flood Safety Project has gained the attention of the SES and the Bureau of Meterology (BOM), and they are now working with Australian National University (ANU) to develop their project as a model that could be applied to other catchment communities.
