Engagement with young people for the Northern Rivers Disaster Adaptation Plan

In 2026, the NSW Reconstruction Authority partnered with Living Lab Northern Rivers to develop and deliver five workshops on natural disaster risks and adaptation to years 9—11 students from high schools across the Northern Rivers. The workshop was titled ‘Ideas and careers that make a difference: A student workshop exploring ideas and careers in disaster adaptation and mitigation.’

Engaging with young people on climate hazard risks and adaptation through the ‘Ideas and careers that make a difference’ workshop had the key objectives of:
— Building knowledge and literacy of natural hazards, hazard risk and best practice adaptation responses developed in international and local settings.
— Raising awareness among young people of potential careers in disaster planning and adaptation.
— Exploring how young people think about natural hazard risks and adaptation in their own communities.
— Receiving input from local young people toward the Northern Rivers Disaster Adaptation Plan (DAP).

Below are the materials developed for these workshops.
